About the Property

Background of the Property

Original owner
In the 1970s, a New York City socialite and 4-time widow, who might have been one part Auntie Mame and one part Holly Golightly, directed the construction of the oceanfront house and the landscaping of the surrounding grounds.

Design / intent
The house and the grounds were designed with formal entertaining in mind. The house was also meant to accommodate discriminating overnight guests.

Hence a house with: wide hallways and stairs, easy access for the elderly and infirm, a very large kitchen, an airy ambiance throughout, and even the almost forgotten pushbutton buzzers on bedroom and dining room walls which once summoned the in-house servant staff brought up from NYC for “the season” but who are now gone with the wind.

Likewise grounds that include brooks and a pond, extensive gardens around the house, broad patios and decks with oceanviews, expansive lawns above the ocean, and a formal entrance with gardens.

The house itself was situated almost 1,000' below the entrance to the property from the private and posted road that is Lookout Point Road, thereby doubly assuring privacy, quiet, and solitude.

Present owners / present use
The family now owning the property acquired the property in the late 1970's, only a few years after the original owner constructed the house.

Rental operations began 15 years ago. The property has become an established, turn-key arrangement for luxury-property guests from throughout the US and abroad.

Guests now coming to the property need not bring anything with them. A housekeeping staff and a caretaker fully organize and equip the property in advance of the guests’ arrival. At the guests’ request, the housekeeper greets the guests at the door upon the guests’ arrival, and then departs.

It is one of the best rental properties of its kind on the New England coast.
